IF you are one of the many people who are planning to take a camping holiday this year it might be a good idea to reserve your pitch now, especially if you intend to go in high season. The recent findings of a questionnaire completed by Halfords' customers reveal that twice as many people intend to holiday in Britain under canvas this summer than the numbers who are bound for sunny Spain. The Camping and Caravanning Club reports that advance bookings for tent pitches are up by 25 per cent at its 109 sites, compared to this time last year. Sales of camping equipment such as tents and sleeping bags are up by 65 per cent at John Lewis stores, which dovetails with figures from the Office of National Statistics which show that the number of Britons taking holidays abroad has declined by 26 per cent in the past two years.
