Neighbourhood news net views A modern day folly STORY: ONE of Gloucester's busiest roads should be a safer place after a dramatic change in layout. Drivers using Ermin Street to travel through Brockworth will now have to give way at a mini-roundabout at the junction with Abbotswood Road. The news comes after several months of work on the road, which carries thousands of vehicles every day. It is hoped the new layout will slow traffic down in the well-known speeding hotspot, and make it easier for residents of the Abbotswood estate to turn out of the junction safely. COMMENT: "What a dramatic change in layout?" "From what I can see, for all the expense, all that has happened is they have created one large speed ramp from Abbotswood to Green Street. "In my opinion, it is even more dangerous as there is now no depth to the roadside kerb which could help redirect an out of control vehicle back onto the road, at best the kerb is now only 50cms proud of the new road surface." JEREMY, HUCCLECOTE COMMENT: "Would I recommend Gloucestershire Highways on account of their panache? Unquestionably, no.
"On its own clumsy record of speed bumps, pitch-black road chicanes causing tight curves in a highway to hell with sidewalk extensions jogging-out from one side of a street to the other as well as corrugated walls to impede driver visibility on entering roundabouts. "Drive down Great Western Road by night and the superior luminosity from overheads lights demonstrate busy Cheltenham Road as being more akin to the black hole of Calcutta together with bouncy jarring road surface to match Mumbai and Chennai. "Has the Conservative administration forgotten those early promises to rid this city of unnecessary speed humps or has Mark Hawthorne joined forces with those desk bound in Shire Hall?
