Summary
Government plans to make squatting illegal have been welcomed by a nationwide tenant eviction and referencing firm.
The amendment to the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Bill being discussed in Parliament will mean anyone found squatting in a residential property faces up to a year in jail and/ or a Pounds 5,000 fine. However, the new offence will not criminalise squatting in commercial and other non-residential buildings. At present, squatters are allowed to enter an empty property if it is left unsecured but it becomes illegal and a civil offence if they refuse to leave somewhere already or due to be occupied.See the full content of this document
