Nature Should Rule Graves ; Letters Write to the Editor, the Citizen, 6-8 The

Summary

I WRITE regarding a vicar banning a family from laying artificial flowers on a grave (Citizen, January 10) I love visiting churches and poking around old graveyards with their lichen-covered gravestones all tilting different ways, some overgrown and some with shrubs or seasonal bulbs growing over them. They show the history of a parish.

How many people in 100 or 200 years are going to find our graveyards quaint and attractive with their horrible shiny gravestones all facing in a regimented direction with the regulation distance between them and the grass mown to within an inch of its life all over not giving anything a chance to grow. Graveyards should be lovely peaceful sanctuaries for visitors both human and animals. Plant something lovely over your loved ones. You'll be adding to nature and helping to create a diverse place of interest.Butterflies and bees don't like silk or plastic!
