Granny Grabs Pounds 62k Benefits ; 68-Year-Old Cheat Facing Prison Term

Summary

GREEDY granny Thelma Grey has admitted cheating the state out of Pounds 62,000 over a 10-year period. Grey, 68, formerly of Merlin Drive, Quedgeley, but now living at the Nodes Point caravan park at St Helens, near Ryde on the Isle of Wight, pleaded guilty to nine charges of deception between 1998 and 2007. The pensioner admitted obtaining income support, pension credits and council tax benefits by saying she was a single woman - when in fact she was happily married and living with her husband Dennis Dutton. At an earlier hearing she had denied all the charges and a trial was scheduled to start next week at the courthouse in Cirencester. However, yesterday at Gloucester Crown Court she changed her pleas to guilty on all counts and was bailed for a pre-sentence report. Judge William Hart told her to be back in court on January 21, and he warned her to face a jail term .

The charges she admits are; Six of dishonestly making false representations to obtain council tax by claiming she was single whereas she was in fact living as husband and wife with Dennis Dutton, Two of dishonestly obtaining income support books by deception from the Department of Work and Pensions by making the same false claim, and One of obtaining money transfers by deception from the DWP.
