Summary
Enjoy The Everyman Cheltenham Take a revived comedy by Alan Bennett, add a large cast led by film actress Alison Steadman and leading stage actor David Troughton. The result? A huge hit. Enjoy, ably directed by Christopher Luscombe, is not what it seems. Set in 1980 Leeds, it centres on Connie and Wilf, who are awaiting re- housing as their back-to-back, slum housing estate is demolished.
To begin with, everything seems quite naturalistic. Connie is losing her memory but she can still fight the familiar battles of a 35-year-old marriage. Wilf too, despite residual injuries from an accident, is long-suffering and aggressive. Typically of Bennett, it's very funny, with Connie as a down-market Hyacinth Bucket, and with the airiest of language receiving very basic put-downs.See the full content of this document
