Corelli Plays the Very Epitome of Baroque ; Corelli Orchestra Pittville Pump Room, Cheltenham

Summary

OPENING with a three trumpet fanfare this concert was the epitome of Baroque, a joy of entertainment music played by an ensemble which totally understands this musical period under the leadership of Warwick Cole. Stolzel would have heard Vivaldi's music in Venice, but his Concerto a tre chori didn't have the great composer's flow. Excellent crisp playing from the three trumpeters, some interesting modulations and surprising chromaticism couldn't compensate for the deeply entrenched sequences. Avoiding the conventional movements for a Suite, Telemann used optional imaginative titles in his Tafelmusik, ending with a stately Menuet.

Bohm also used this form in his Suite in G major which pointed heavily towards French dances. Even Bach in his Suite No 3 did not conform, but from the overture through the well-known air and the joyous Gavotte 1 this was Baroque music at its best and compared favourably with Vivaldi's Concerto in A minor for Two Violins.
