Summary
AV is known as the Alternative Vote, and is based around ranking all the political candidates in order of preference. Under AV an election winner needs the support of 50 per cent of the votes, and if no candidate gets 50 per cent support, the last placed candidate drops out and voters' second preferences come into play.
