The Citizen Gloucestershire
AS readers will know, I am a member of the Environmental Audit Select Committee which has just completed a substantial and, hopefully, influential report into the Coalition Government's proposal to establish a Green Investment Bank. The report makes clear that the new institution should be a fully fledged investment bank and needs to focus on new green technologies.
FOR a first aider, treating a head injury is relatively simple as there is little that can be done. However, each case should be treated as potentially very serious because it can be a life threatening condition.
MORE men who are diagnosed with prostate cancer in Gloucestershire are surviving for longer, according to the latest figures. Nearly 80 per cent of men found to have the disease between 1999 and 2003 have survived for at least five years, compared to a 35 per cent five-year survival rate for men diagnosed in the county between 1985 and 1989.
YOUR risk of developing prostate cancer increases with age, and is more common in men over the age of 50 years. Prostate cancer is also more common among men of African- Caribbean and African descent.
Busy for Races? You Bet We Are
THE horses will be hot to trot and the punters will be dolled up with handbags and their glad rags as the county launches into Race Week. More than 210,000 punters are in the county for racing's flagship four-day event - which kicks off today with a celebration of its centenary.
STUDENTS at Chosen Hill School will be putting their talents to good use for Red Nose Day on Friday. The school is holding a talent show during lunchtime on the day with various performances lined up by pupils to wow an audience of their peers.
VISITING restrictions are in place at both county hospitals because of the risk of Norovirus. Patients at both Gloucestershire Royal and Cheltenham General Hospitals have been affected by Norovirus, which is currently widespread in the county.
Richards Ready for an Australian Adventure
GLOBETROTTER Marc Richards will be hoping a spell playing in a Sydney surfing paradise can help kick-start an Australian football adventure. The former Gloucester City defender, who upped sticks and moved Down Under at the end of last year, has recently signed for New South Wales Premier League club Manly United.
Sam Can't Play It Again for Tigers
SPEEDY striker Sam Malsom is set to return to Hereford United following an injury-hit loan spell with Gloucester City. The 23-year-old's deal from the Bulls is due to expire after tonight's game at Nuneaton Town, but an abdominal problem has brought an early end to his City spell.
Roaring Success Down Under for Matt
FORMER Hartpury College captain Matt Smith helped the Brisbane Roar secure the Australian A-League title in sensational style on Sunday. The showpiece grand final against the Central Coast Mariners went into extra time following a goalless 90 minutes.
Would You Plug in for a Leccy Motor?
NEWS that electric van maker Modecis is in administration brought me no joy. I like the idea of electrically powered vehicles, especially since major manufacturers have started to produce electric runabouts that actually look like cars, rather than motorised chemical toilets. But not only are they horrendously expensive to buy, electric cars are simply useless for anything other than a jaunt to the shops or the school run.
SUPPORT for our local radio station has been flooding in after news spread that BBC Radio Gloucestershire could be left with just a breakfast and drive-time show. The station is one of 40 BBC local outlets earmarked for the changes, which could see BBC Radio Five Live broadcast during the day.
ONE of the oldest surviving village shows in the county is recruit helpers. Tibberton Show, which started in 1898, will be held on Saturday, August 20.
PEOPLE wanting to relax can join a new meditation class in Stroud. Mindful Meditation Morning will be held at the Red Dog Studio in Gloucester Street on Sunday, March 27.
IT may have been fixed by now, but when I took this photo of what looks like a mini-Tardis in Northgate Street, the box of tricks had been lying on its side for at least two weeks. Apart from being a less than welcoming sight on what is supposed to be one of the city's main streets, (it can't have done anything for trade in the cafe alongside it), it could even be dangerous.
