In Song Again for Reunion

THE choristers of Gloucester Cathedral date back to before 1072 and have filled the city with song ever since. Legend has it that when William the Conqueror sent the Norman Abbot Serlo to Gloucester in 1072, he found there were already eight boys being educated there.

A Bomb, a Gun, a Poppy

A BATTLEFIELD of night and day, just take the ammunition away. Why take our brave soldiers from us? I am a medal on a tunic. Front eyes to the centre presented to me on that parade.

The Highway

I AM a wayfarer on the highway Which is pitted by millions of feet, The feet of my many predecessors. I walk alone on the pitted highway, There is no companion or helpmeet To lighten my heavy tread with good cheer. But there's no turning back, even to glance At what has been. I must bite down my fear And put my best foot forward, then my worst And hope that in the end fortune or chance Will see me through to the end of the road.

Delicacies

BLACKBIRD pecking on the ground. Can't imagine what delicacies down there to be found. Well, perhaps an insect or two, the odd worm, even seeds may do. Hopping around till you've had your fill. Must fly now, the cat has left the window sill.

Thoughts On Love

IF love were like water, then ne'er mind the fee. I'd buy the wide world's oceans, to prove my love for thee. If love were like to moonbeams, dancing through the trees. I'd take my net to capture all, and set them at thy knees. If love could build a mountain, from heart's desire and tears. Then from my nightly thoughts and dreams, peaks would rise to calm thy fears. If love were just a short-lived dream, one caress and then t'were done. 'Tis marvel darling our love's survived, for fifty years...

Grandad - Boy Scout

FOR my linguist badge in the Boy Scouts I asked a French chef for 'roastbiff', his humour must have deserted (on French leave?) I stood for the roasting, but fell at the biff. I tried to rescue someone's pet from a roof top, which would have been my good deed for the day, but the landlord gave me a farthing to stick it back up there, the Black Dog Inn way. For my signallers' badge in the Boy Scouts I sent this message, the semaphore way: "To the farmer, my sincerest apologies for lighting my ...

Still Much to Be Thankful for at Harvest

I LOOKED back to what I wrote in this column about a year ago, and it was about the credit crunch and how it might affect us. At that time we were just getting used to seeing bankers with their heads in their hands wondering what was going to happen to them.

Childhood Memories

WHEN you walk by the sea, with sand in your toes, the sun on your face, it will take you back to your childhood days. The mind can play tricks on you from time-to-time, but the happy memories will never fade. Your childhood may have come and gone, but all your happy memories will always live on!
